I wasn’t born into a Christian home but by the time I was 5years old, my parents were already born again and tongue –talking. However, this didn’t impress me as I grew up because the only difference between them and my friends whose parents were not Christians was that we went to Church regularly, had night vigils and they spoke in tongues.
We were just as broke, ill and afraid of witches, wizards and the devil like any other person. We were put, maybe unintentionally, in awe and fear of what the devil could do.
So the devil became the proverbial “bogey man” of folklore that could get us at will. We lived in perpetual dread and fear of what the devil could do.
I got born again at the age of eleven plus and was in my second year in secondary school. My father was a lay preacher who often went to preach at Scripture Union programmes, took me and my elder siblings for their Easter camp where he was going to be preaching.
That experience changed my life; it had a deep profound effect on me. Fellowshipping with other Christians; waking up to pray and going to the dining hall to eat together was a very fantastic experience for me but they never gave an altar call.
When I came back, I went to my mum whom I felt was the most genuine Christian I knew, she explained to me what it meant be born again and she led me to Christ. After that experience, the next profound visitation I had was when I was baptized by immersion; I was fourteen years old at this time; for days I could not explain the ecstatic, exhilarating joy I had in me.
There was a presence inside and around me that I could not explain; I could not even understand why I was so happy and peaceful. Unfortunately, all these times I had not received the Holy Spirit and certainly knew nothing about my rights in Christ and the New Creation Realities.
I rededicated my life to God countless times. However, one day in my second year at the University of Benin where I was studying law, I went for fellowship at Youth For Christ [now known as BLW].
I had been attending the fellowship for weeks. What drew me to them was the fact that they were the happiest Christians I had ever met and I wanted what they had.
Hence, I started attending the fellowship. One glorious Sunday evening just before Easter, I stepped forward to give my life to Christ- this was in 1988.
That night was the last time I did it. After the service later that night, two sisters laid hands on me to receive the Holy Spirit and I was gloriously filled…
