TITLE: ONE EXTREME TO ANOTHER.
My journey as a believer started in 1991, while in my final year in the university. During my university years, I was a member of a gang, which was popularly known as ‘Black Axe’.
I had a relation in the same University, who was born again, and a member of the Believers Loveworld Fellowship. He was always trying to preach to me, but I never gave him the opportunity.
One day, during my final year in the University, I felt so empty, and fed up with wild partying, and the gang culture. I was very unsettled in my mind, not knowing what was the matter with me.
I asked God for help, and I could hear God telling me to go and look for my relation, who was in Believers Loveworld Fellowship, that he will tell me what to do. I journeyed to the flat where he lived and found him lying on his bed surrounded by some of his fellowship members, who came to visit him, because he was unwell at the time.
When they saw me, they were a bit frightened, in wonder of why I had to come to the flat. My relation was concerned when I called him out of the room, into the hall way.
He thought he had done something wrong, and I’d come with gang members to attack him. He was shocked when I told him my story, and how God had said I should come looking for him, to tell me what to do.
On hearing my story, the illness immediately disappeared from him, and he began preaching to me with everything within him. When he asked if I would like to be born again, I told him to slow down, that he was overstepping his boundaries.
Then he calmingly told me that they were having there mid-week fellowship the following day, whether I would like to come. I promised to be there, and then left his flat, feeling much better.
The following day, I had forgotten about the fellowship, and was on my way to the ladies hostel, with one of my fellow gang members, when I heard my relative screaming out my name. I never knew that we were walking passed the area where the fellowship was holding, and because he was looking out for me, he was able to see me walking up the path.
I told my friend to keep going that I will catch up with him later. I attended the fellowship, and heard one of the most amazing sermons that I’ve ever heard in my life.
When the preacher made the Alter Call, I was among the first to raise my hands and be born again. We were told to wait behind to receive the infilling of the Holy Ghost, which I did, after the service was over.
They explained to us what it means to receive the Holy Ghost. I was very much interested, especially when I heard that an extra ordinary power comes with it.
I knew I would need that power to be able to withstand the pressures and attacks that would come from former gang members, because nobody leaves the gang and goes free. When hands were laid on us, I went down on the floor like a log of wood, and didn’t know where I was for about 40mins.
When I got up, a number of students had gathered, looking at the scene, in amazement as to what had happened to this one gang member. I got up from the floor with such an extraordinary boldness, very different from the one I was used to in the past, to the point that I knew for sure that something happened to me.
At that point, I was ready to face any onslaught from the gang, which to my surprise, never happened till I graduated from the university. The very next day, the news had filtered into the whole campus, but I didn’t leave so much doubt in the minds of the people, as I immediately began to identify myself with Believers Loveworld Fellowship members, and began preaching on the school buses, on the way to lectures, and in lecture rooms, when time permitted.
Ever since, I have gone from one amazing level of glory, to another, without ever looking back. I would like to thank my Father, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, for answering the call of God upon His life, without which I may have well gone down into the grave by now, miserable, and empty, ready to rot in hell fire. Thanks be to God, I am Born Again!!! God has taken me from one very extreme level, to another.
