WHAT IT MEANS TO ACT IN A CHRIST LIKE WAY TO OTHERS

#WEEKLY NUGGETS

The world often asks: What does it mean to act morally?
But for a follower of Christ, the deeper question is: What does it mean to love people the way God calls us to love them?

Philosopher Immanuel Kant once expressed it like this:
“Never treat people merely as a means to an end, but always as an end in and of themselves, too.”

Interestingly, this aligns deeply with Biblical truth. Scripture teaches that every person is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) — which means every individual carries inherent worth, purpose, and dignity, not because of what they can do for us, but because of who they are in God’s eyes.

Of course, in everyday life, we interact with people in ways that meet mutual needs — and there’s nothing wrong with that. But problems arise when we start seeing people only as tools for our benefit, rather than souls deeply loved by God.

→ “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” — Philippians 2:3

Have you ever felt used? Maybe someone pretended to care about you just to get something — attention, intimacy, money, or influence. That sting we feel comes from being treated like an object rather than a person made in God’s image.

Sadly, we can all fall into the temptation of doing this ourselves — especially with those closest to us.

WHAT IT MEANS TO ACT IN A CHRIST LIKE WAY TO OTHERS...

→ You want your child to take over the family business… but have you asked God what His plan is for their life?
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” — Ephesians 2:10

→ You want your girlfriend or boyfriend to move across the country for you… but have you considered what’s best for their calling and growth?
“Love…does not insist on its own way.” — 1 Corinthians 13:5

→ You want your spouse to change certain traits… but what if those qualities are part of how God uniquely designed them to fulfill their purpose?
“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” — Romans 15:7

Of course, healthy relationships involve sacrifice, compromise, and shared dreams. But at the heart of any Christ-like relationship should not just be the question “What can you do for me?” but “How can I help you become all God created you to be?”

Because ultimately, that’s how God loves us — not as tools, but as beloved sons and daughters with a purpose, a future, and infinite worth.

→ “Let all that you do be done in love.” — 1 Corinthians 16:14
