WHERE ARE GOD FEARING LEADERS? BY PASTOR W. F. KUMUYI
(DCLM Daily Manna)
KEY VERSE: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn” (Proverbs 29:2).
TEXT: Proverbs 29:1-8 (KJV) He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. 2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn. 3 Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father, but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance. 4 The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it. 5 A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet. 6 In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice. 7 The righteous considereth the cause of the poor, but the wicked regardeth not to know it. 8 Scornful men bring a city into a snare, but wise men turn away wrath.
DCLM Daily Manna For Today:
In the late 18th to early 19th century England, William Wilberforce lived as a man with vision and passion, always seeking to use godly principles to influence the toxic political space where oppression, injustice, and cruelty against fellow human beings were the order of the day. He was a British politician who fought tirelessly for the abolition of slave trade. Despite facing immense opposition and personal struggles, he remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to justice. His leadership thus exemplifies the impact of godly leadership in society, where moral convictions guide actions for the betterment of humanity. WHERE ARE GOD FEARING LEADERS?
Today’s passage reminds us again about the need for men and women of godly character, humane principles, and a sense of social justice, equity, and fairness to occupy our public offices. It highlights sundry lessons on the effect of good and bad conduct in private and public spaces. It retells us of the importance of exemplary leadership in public offices. We are reminded that when citizens with questionable character lead and operate freely in public spaces, the people will groan under the weight of corruption, injustice, and despair.
The Bible affirms that righteousness in private and public spaces will continue to exalt a nation. However, sin, evil, injustice, oppression, and corruption will bring reproach, backwardness, and poverty to that nation (Proverbs 14:34). How we need to take the issue of who occupies elected positions and public offices in our countries more seriously, and seek legitimate and godly ways to carry out our civic responsibilities as commanded in Scripture. In the same breath, each of us is responsible for promoting fairness, justice, shared prosperity, and godliness in our spheres of influence, which is the secret of producing godly leaders and spreading good governance for our collective benefit.
THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
