Why Don’t You Preach On Deliverance?

QUESTION – John Jeff Momoh (Sierra Leone): I want to know if deliverance is necessary for a Christian especially when you think of the African background and the ceremonies and rituals performed. Why don’t you preach on deliverance?

ANSWER: He’s asking me “Why don’t I preach on deliverance?” {Smiling} Well, I do preach on deliverance; I may not preach the kind of deliverance that you might be thinking about, but I believe the Word of God brings us deliverance [really]. And, once we receive Christ, we are delivered! That’s what it’s all about! See, the Gospel is a gospel of deliverance – you are automatically delivered. Now, when we receive Christ, we receive Him as Lord of our lives. You have to understand this – how we got salvation. In Romans Chapter 10 verse 9, the Bible says “If thou shall confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in thine heart that God raised him up from the dead, thou shall be saved.” Now that means that Jesus Christ has become Lord of your life! If He’s become Lord of your life – and by that, you became saved – then what do you need to be delivered from anymore? That is the deliverance! The Lordship of Jesus Christ over your life is what broke the dominion of Satan from your life completely because Jesus became your Lord! You cannot have Jesus as Lord of your life, and at the same time have Satan lording it over you. So that’s the deliverance! So the gospel of Jesus Christ already brought deliverance!

Now, it doesn’t matter what kind of background, like you talked about fetish background, African rituals and all those things that people used to perform; when you become a Christian, the Bible says in 2nd Corinthians Chapter 5 and verse 17: “…if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation” automatically! Then it says “… old things have passed away and all things have become new.” So, that’s why the Christian does not need deliverance. The Christian has already gotten his deliverance when he made Jesus Christ the Lord of his life! When you became a Christian, you already received your deliverance into Christ. So now you’re in Christ! The trouble with a lot of people is that, even though they are in Christ, they still have the mentality of bondage; they still have the mentality of the oppressed; they have the mentality of satanic strongholds.

This is their problem, not because what they are experiencing is real – they are experiencing a mirage! You see, and you know, Jesus said: “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” [John 8:32] The truth is vital. So, the Bible already tells us that he begot us again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. So we are into that living hope today by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. And remember, when Jesus died, we died with him; when he was buried, we were buried with him; when God raised him from the dead, we were raised together with him! So today we have a new life in Christ. We are no longer in bondage. We don’t need that deliverance anymore. So, when you became a Christian, you were completely delivered. Now you don’t need another deliverance; Jesus Christ is Lord of your life! He’s already your Lord; you don’t need another deliverance.
