Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Exodus 20:12
The Word of God provides clear instructions about the relationship between children and their parents. The apostle Paul in Ephesians 6:1-3 (AMPC) highlights the importance of children obeying and honouring their parents: βCHILDREN, OBEY your parents in the Lord [as His representatives], for this is just and right.

Honour (esteem and value as precious) your father and your motherβthis is the first commandment with a promiseβ That all may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth.β
When you dishonour your parents, it affects your life negatively. Success may come, but it can be fleeting, with cycles of ups and downs, losses, and instability. Itβs one of the reasons some people experience unexplainable instability, setbacks, and even premature death.
So, do what the Word says; honour your parents or those who may be standing in that role over you. When you do, the result is clear: βIt shall be well with you in life.β Honouring your parents isnβt just about your actions, but also about your attitude. The way you speak to them matters. Furthermore, observe that God didnβt add any condition to you honouring your parents. He didnβt say, βHonour your father and mother if they treat you wellβ; no! Their status as your parents is enough qualification for them to be honoured. It makes no difference what issues or challenges they may have; theyβre your parents, and youβre obligated to honour them.
If your mother or father is unwell or living in poor conditions, do something about it; show care. Others may disregard them, but theyβre your parents, not theirs. You might say, βMy parents were very mean to me and didnβt give me the right love and care as a child; therefore, I donβt feel I should honour them.β Well, theyβre still your parents, and you have a duty to respect and honour them regardless.

You have to do what the Word says. No matter how much you speak in tongues or demonstrate spiritual fervour, it canβt replace this biblical principle. Godβs Word is consistent, and honouring your parents is a divine instruction that brings blessings and ensures your journey in life is pleasantβupward and forward. Hallelujah!
